अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्।उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥
(ayaṃ nijaḥ paro veti gaṇanā laghucetasām | udāracaritānāṃ tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam ||)The world is a family
One is a relative, the other stranger,
say the small minded.
The entire world is a family,
live the magnanimous.
lift up your mind, enjoy
the fruit of Brahmanic freedom.
—Maha Upanishad 6.71–75
I come from an India which is considered as the fabled land of monks, sages and spiritual leaders, an India which has been the beacon of light for all living beings for centuries. I come from an India which embodies ”Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam”. I come from the land of Swami Vivekananda who addressed the citizens of a foreign nation as his brothers and sisters, from the land of land of Swami Vivekananda who considered India as the mother of all religions and taught the world about ’Advaita’ and universal acceptance. I come from an India who has sheltered the persecuted and the persecutors alike. I come from an India where time itself has lost count of its ancientness, whose oldest scriptures date back to some 10,000 years, where there are more gods and goddesses than population of some countries, where rivers, trees and mountains are all considered sacred and worshipped. I come from an India, who was raid, pillaged and plundered by invaders of all races and yet, chose not to expand even an inch of her borders by bloodshed. I come from an India who rose like a phoenix from her ashes and still stands tall in all her glory and wisdom. I also come from an India which seeks validation through filters, from western civilization while people from all other possible corners of the world adore and accept our culture, from an India where we celebrate Halloween and tirade our own festivals, culture and traditions under the disguise of modernity. I also come from an India where Bollywood glorifies foreign islamic invaders who looted and slaughtered millions of us, destroyed monuments for centuries but fail to even acknowledge the sacrifice our own heroes. I come from an India where scientists and researchers from different corners of the world draw inspiration from our Vedas and Upanishads written centuries back while we (read a comedian) consider them as old and outdated. I come from an India where a politician compares Hindutva to radical jihadist groups, an India where Bollywood and some comedians can mock and make fun of Hindu gods and deities hiding behind sarcasm but would never dare to do so to other religions. I also come from an India where we bleed Blue even if we lose to Green while some celebrate the loss of our own nation in the name of ’Constitutional Freedom’. I live in an India where a comedian slams Indians and portrays them as rapists infront of a country which has a worse rape ratio than India and yet, we celebrate him. I live in an India where we are so tolerant that anyone can defame the nation safely anywhere in the world hiding behind jokes and sarcasm. Where else can you do that? I also live in an India where actors and cricketers are considered heroes while the doctors and soldiers are relegated to obscurity. I live in an India where we draw inspiration from a certain Abraham Lincoln who rose from abject poverty to become the 16th president of USA and yet, slam our own leader by saying "this country is ruled by a tea seller".
